Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) advances plasma and fusion sciences and technology. The program emphasizes the underlying basic research in plasma and fusion sciences, with the long-term goal of harnessing fusion as a viable energy source.
FES supports research to:
- understand the physics of plasmas
- identify and explore innovative and cost-effective development paths to fusion energy
- partner in international efforts to advance the science and technology of energy-producing plasmas
The research plan focuses on the following areas:
- Basic plasma science and computational programs
- Innovative experiments to broaden the science base
- Make fusion more practical
FES is pursuing this goal through an integrated program of research based in U.S. universities, industry, and national laboratories, augmented by a broad program of international collaboration.
