Office of Science Committee of Visitors (COV) Information
Advanced Scientific Computing Research
The first Advanced Scientific Computing Research COV met March 9-10, 2004. They looked at research in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Collaboratories. The Advanced Scientific Computing Advisory Committee’s charge , report , and DOE response are all on the web. A second COV conducted a review of the Advanced Scientific Computing Research Facilities Program (including the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, the Advanced Computing Research Testbeds, Leadership Class Computing, and the Energy Sciences network), and, network testbeds and research on April 4-5, 2005. The COV reported to the Department in April 2005.
Basic Energy Sciences (BES)
The second Basic Energy Sciences COV met March 17-18, 2003. They looked at research in the Materials Science and Engineering Division. The charge and report are on the Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee’s website. The third Basic Energy Sciences COV was charged to look at the Scientific User Facilities Division on March 10, 2004. The COV reported to Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (BESAC) in August 2004. The DOE response was be presented at BESAC, December 6, 2004. The forth Basic Energy Sciences COV was charged to look at the Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences Division on September 3, 2004. The COV reported to Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (BESAC) on June 6, 2005 and the Department responded within 30 days.
Biological and Environmental Research
Two Biological and Environmental Research COVs have been formed. The First COV was charged on July 23, 2003 to look at the Climate Change Research Division. This COV met on March 1-3, 2004 and reported to the Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee (BERAC) in November 2004. The Department responded to this report in December 2004. The Second COV was charged on April 21, 2004 to look at the Environmental Remediation Sciences Division. This COV met on October 5-7, 2004 and reported to BERAC in November 2004. The Department responded to this report in December 2004.
Fusion Energy Sciences
The first Fusion Energy Sciences COV met in March 2004. They looked at research in Fusion Theory and Computations. The charge, report, and DOE response are all on the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee’s website.
The report of the second COV, concerned with innovative confinement concepts, inertial confinement fusion and general plasma physics, was presented to FESAC on April 7, 2005. The DOE response is also on the FESAC website at: http://www.ofes.fusion.doe.gov/more_html/FESAC/OFESResponseto2ndCOV.pdf
High Energy Physics
The first High Energy Physics COV met March 8-9, 2004. They examined in detail the four major activities of the program: accelerators, national laboratories, universities and projects. They presented their report to High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) on April 18, 2004 and it was officially transmitted to DOE on April 22, 2004. The COV charge , report, and DOE response are all on the web.
Nuclear Physics
The first Nuclear Physics COV met December 11-12, 2003. They examined support for university groups, major projects and laboratory operations. They presented their report to the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee Feb. 27, 2004 and it was officially transmitted to DOE on March 15, 2004. The charge, report, and DOE response are all on the web.
