Robert T. Anderson is an environmental microbiologist and
manages the environmental microbiology elements,
some of the field research elements and the DOE-related portion of the NSF-cosponsored
Environmental Molecular Science Institutes (
EMSIs)
within the Environmental Remediation Sciences Program (ERSP). Dr. Anderson is also
DOE’s representative to the Interagency Steering Committee
on Multimedia Environmental Models (
ISCMEM).
Dr. Anderson comes to DOE from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst
with a strong background in the microbial ecology and bioremediation potential
of anaerobic microorganisms found within contaminated aquifers. Specifically,
Dr. Anderson’s research background centered on evaluating subsurface
microbial processes including the in situ stimulation of sulfate and metal-reducing
bacteria to immobilize or otherwise remove contaminant metals or organics
from groundwater at the field scale. Dr. Anderson holds a bachelor’s
degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia and a Master’s
Degree in Environmental Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University and
a Doctorate in Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Anderson is a former USGS employee within the water resources division
(WRD/ER/BRR) and research faculty member of the Microbiology Department
at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst.
