On May 5, 2008, a team from Santa Monica High School in Santa Monica, CA won the 2008 U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl®. Shown here with the first-place trophy are (from left) Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman; coach Ingo Gaida; students Ian Fels Scheffler, Marino Di Franco, Dimitry Petrenko, and Alexandre Boulgakov; and Under Secretary for Science Dr. Raymond L. Orbach. Initiated in 1991, the DOE National Science Bowl® encourages students to excel in science and math, and to purue careers in those fields. The DOE National Science Bowl® is the only science competition in the U.S. sponsored by a federal science agency and involves more than 12,000 students from 1,800 schools nationwide each year.
