Office of Biological and Environmental Research Weekly Report

June 25, 2007

Aerodyne Research, Inc., 2007 Winner of Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technical Transfer Research (STTR) Firm of the Year Award:  The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Small Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) has selected Aerodyne Research, Inc. of Billerica, Massachusetts, as the 2007 SBIR / STTR Firm of the Year for its contributions to the Office of Science Atmospheric Science Program (ASP) in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research. Aerodyne’s Phase II SBIR project, “Development of a Versatile Aircraft Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) for Organic Aerosol Analysis,” produced important new information in the analysis of atmospheric aerosols during the Megacity Aerosol eXperiment in Mexico City (MAX-Mex) in March 2006.

MAX-Mex was conducted as part of the Megacity Initiative: Local and Global Research Observations (MILAGRO), which included the Office of Science ASP, the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, along with Mexican science agencies and universities. Aerodyne’s AMS enhanced scientist’s ability to determine whether atmospheric aerosols were from soot or other sources and provided data needed to identify regional and local contributions to urban and regional aerosol budgets.

The award will be presented during the 8th Annual DOE Small Business Conference, June 26-28, 2007, at the Washington Hilton, Washington, DC.
