Flashback in gas turbine combustors is of considerable concern in the electric power generation industry because it can lead to expensive machine damage and outage time. The inability to safely premix the fuel and air without damage from flashback or autoignition is impeding the advance of catalytic and non-catalytic low NOx combustion technology. A solution to these problems would remove a hurdle in maintaining safe, durable operation of highly premixed combustors especially for these designs which involve premixing upstream of the flame stabilization region. This project will develop a short, low pressure drop, integrated flashback arrestor/premixer for enabling safe, durable operation of highly premixed, low NOx ground power gas turbine engines. The proposed concept offers a flashback arrestor that can be readily integrated into many existing premixer designs, thereby providing an enabling technology that can be useful in both new and retrofit applications. In Phase I, proof of concept testing will be carried out with moderate pressure testing of a flashback arrestor design at ten atmospheres, with full pressure combustor rig testing to be carried out in Phase II.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: In the electric power generation industry, there have been incidents in which flashback may have been related to gas turbine damage measured in millions of dollars. Flashback arrestor technology might provide the solution to a major industry problem and prevent expensive machine damage and outage time.
