Dye sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (DSPCs) are promising as low cost photovoltaic alternatives. However, considerable problems remain with regard to producing devices with reproducible performance and in developing large area manufacturing processes which exploit the simple cell structure. This project will develop the materials and a scalable manufacturing process which will enable DSPCs to be economically produced. The basis of the approach is a polymer electrolyte technology being developed for lithium-ion batteries and electrochromic windows, devices which are similar in structure to DSPCs. Phase I will demonstrate the feasibility of high current density DSPCs comparing several polymeric electrolyte systems with conductivities >10-3 S/cm. A laminated polymer composite counter electrode and spray deposited TiO2 layer will also be demonstrated as components which enhance manufacturability. The performance of cells of 5 and 25 cm2 area will be compared with a Phase I goal of 5% conversion efficiency. A 25 x 25 cm (1ft2) demonstration device will also be produced.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: DSPCs made by continuous coating and lamination processes hold the prospect for solar cells at <$1/watt. Other applications include integrated power systems for consumer electronics, smart cards, sensors, instrumentation and electrochromic windows, mirrors and eyewear.
