Both surface and groundwater are threatened by buried waste at a number of DOE sites. Potential contamination of more than 200 million cubic meters of soil and 600 billion gallons of ground water could result from subsurface plumes containing dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), hazardous metals, and radionuclides. This project will develop and demonstrate the Mobile Solar-Powered Destructive Adsorption Technology (DAT) system for in-situ treatment of DNAPLs. The system will be self-contained, modular and low cost. All process effluents will be benign and require no further treatment. Laboratory experiments will be conducted on the use of high intensity solar radiation for thermally enhanced soil vapor extraction and on the application of destruction absorption technology (DAT) on chlorinated organic solvents, leading to a conceptual system design.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Successful demonstration of the Mobile Solar-Powered DAT will lead to the development of a portable desorption unit which will be well suited for low cost clean up of volatile organic compound (VOL) contaminated soil, particularly in sites that are too remote or too small for large scale off-gas treatment.
