A Pressure/Temperature Tool for Geothermal Drilling Applications Based on a High-Temperature Universal Logging Computer--E-Spectrum Technologies, Inc., 12725 Spectrum Drive, San Antonio, TX  78249; 210-696-8848

Mr. Jeffrey Gabelmann, Principal Investigator

Mr. Robert A. Houston, Business Official

DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-00ER82992

Amount:  $100,000

In geothermal drilling, limitations on the operating temperature range of electronics makes it expensive to obtain sufficient reservoir data to properly model and manage geothermal well fields.  Using newly available high-temperature electronic components, a low-cost, high-temperature, reprogrammable Universal Logging Computer will be designed.  It will be developed and made available in a standard Original Equipment Manufacturer package for use by the logging industry for incorporation into tools designed for a variety of applications.  A survey of available components construction technologies will be conducted.  A hardware system design document and a preliminary software specification will be completed for a Universal Logging Computer.  The different integration approaches employed by subcontracted companies will demonstrate the versatility of the computer and the ease with which it can be integrated into any tool design.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:  By having a high-temperature Universal Logging Computer commercially available, logging companies will be able to easily design their own electronics packages.  This will enable the geothermal drilling industry to commercialize a variety of logging tools for pressure/temperature, casing inspection, and other applications.
