High-power pulsed radio-frequency (rf) waves are needed to accelerate electrons in linear colliders and advanced accelerators. In a two-beam-accelerator (TBA) scheme, the rf power extracted from a high-current, bunched drive beam is used to provide energy gain to another low-current, electron beam. An ideal rf power extraction device should be efficient, simple, and free of unwanted higher order modes. This project will demonstrate the feasibility of using a cylindrical wavequide lined with ceramics to extract high power from a train of bunched electron beam propagating along its axis. In Phase I, a ceramic power extractor and a specially designed mode converter will be designed, fabricated and tested using the test facility at CERN. The test structure will operate at 21 GHz to make full use of the existing beam at the test facility. An important Phase I objective is to test the breakdown limit of the dielectric material.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Future linear colliders (2 TeV and above) beyond the Next Linear Collider being developed at U.S. and Japan could use the proposed rf power source to accelerate electrons/positrons to high energy. A ceramic rf power extractor could also be used as a high power microwave or millimeter wave source in communications, defense, and commercial accelerators.
