Efforts are underway within the accelerator community to develop high-gradient rf accelerators that are based on microwave sources at relatively high frequencies. Yet no corresponding high-power components providing transmission and proper feed of the accelerating structure are currently available. This project will design, fabricate, and test a complete set of components for the transmission and control of microwave radiation for operation at 34.272 GHz in a future high-gradient linear collider. In Phase I, two concepts of a quasi-optical delay line distribution system (DLDS) will be examined. Detailed design computations will be carried out in order to choose the design that will provide the best performance and simplicity. The key components to be designed at 34.272 GHz include power combiner/splitter, controllable launcher for DLDS system, low-loss miter bend, TE10 (rect.wg)-TE01) (Circ.wg) mode converter, and up- and down tapers.

described by awardee: Successful development should create demand for a number
of sets to feed a test accelerator, and ultimately thousands of such sets would
be needed for a full-scale multi-TeV electron-positron collider.
Other commercial uses include components for millimeter-wave radar and
millimeter-wave communication systems.
