Amount:  $100,000

A high energy physics experiment may have up to 1000 collaborating physicists from nations spanning the entire globe.  Each collaborator brings a unique combination of interests, and each has to search through the same large number of messages, research results, and other communications to find what is useful.  This research will produce an electronic logbook, shared by collaborators, and searchable in ways tailored to scientific needs.  In particular, the effort will research and implement "learned searches" and "target messaging" in the context of a collaborative, scientific logbook for High Energy Physics Collaborations (HEPBook).  Phase I will investigate intelligent software agent technology to provide remote data selection.  The results of such a search may use the same technology to provide target messaging to return logbook data to the remote collaborator.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: In addition to the high energy physics application, the HEPBook, with its "learned searches" and "target messaging," solves a general problem—it improves the timeliness and quality of information.  Therefore, it should be relevant to organizations sharing and needing information in a timely manner.
