The
target system for the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) will consist of several
specially designed targets that utilize a wide variety of high power beams from
the driver accelerator. However, the
simulation of target performance has many drawbacks: (1) the computer codes for
the transport of beam particles and rare isotope production were developed and
maintained for other accelerator applications; (2) the database for rare isotope
release is sparse and incomplete; (3) no standard thermo-hydraulics code is
coupled to the transport code for heat deposition analysis; and (4) the
shielding analysis and radioactivity inventory requires a systematic approach
that is intrinsically integrated to other parts of the calculation.
This project will develop a computer code system that would integrate all
of the requirements for an RIA target design. During
Phase I, the basic codes for the code system were selected and analyzed, and
some calculations were performed to check the codes’ suitability for targets
designed for the RIA. Phase II will
modify the codes, develop interfaces to facilitate the flow of data from one
code to another, and create an integrated script or user interface to facilitate
the use of the code system. Several
nuclear models will be introduced into the system, including fragmentation of
heavy ions, fission product yields, and light mass elements production.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The computer code system should provide a benchmarked set of codes and procedures, tested for RIA, that can be expanded to a variety of other accelerator systems such as commercial accelerators for radioisotope production, medical applications, and industrial uses.
