Development
of coal gasifier technology for electric power production is critical to meeting
domestic power needs in the 21st century.
Gasification of our most abundant fossil fuel has the potential to raise
operating efficiencies from 35% to 60% while reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
heavy metal pollution, and producing valuable cogeneration products such as
hydrogen. However, particulate
material can adversely affect filter performance within advanced gasifiers and
alkali species in the gas stream can lead to component corrosion.
These two problems can greatly limit the usefulness of the gasifiers.
This project will develop a laser based diagnostic tool that can measure,
in situ and in real time, the size specific solid loading and
corrosive species concentration. To
show feasibility, Phase I will experimentally test the laser diagnostic tool in
a laboratory setting. A full-scale
design will be conducted to assure that the instrument can easily be used in a
gasifier. In Phase II, the
diagnostic tool will be tested in a gasifier facility.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The diagnostic tool should have commercial applications in both conventional coal-fired power plants as well as in coal-fed gasifiers.
