The generation of light based on current technologies is expensive and detrimental to the environment.  Solid state lighting technology can be developed with dramatic increases in efficiency and costs as low, or lower, than the least expensive lighting systems available today.  Polymer light emitting diodes offer the best cost/performance combination of all possible solid state lighting technologies.  This project will develop a new family of highly efficient phosphorescent emitters that utilize a new concept in the generation of white light from a single-layer polymeric light-emitting diode.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:  The cost/performance characteristics of the proposed polymer light emitting diodes should enable broad lighting applications in both commercial and military sectors.  Other photonic applications include displays, lasers, sensors and photovoltaic devices.
