Polarized
neutron scattering is an important technology for characterizing magnetic and
other materials. In particular,
polarized helium three (P-3He) is a novel technology for creating polarized
beams and, perhaps more importantly, for the analysis of polarization in highly
divergent scattered beams. To ensure
accurate results, the analysis of scattered beams requires specialized targets
with complex geometries. Special
materials and handling procedures are required to give the targets a long useful
lifetime. For example, the targets
must be shielded from stray magnetic fields from nearby equipment.
This project will develop and demonstrate hybrid targets made from glass
and/or aluminum. Phase I will build
prototype targets and measure their useful lifetimes. Targets will be filled
with polarized 3He and monitored in a low-field NMR apparatus. Collaboration
with neutron scattering experts will be undertaken to determine the most
important target geometries for current and future experiments.
