Gamma ray spectrometers are an important element of nuclear and elementary particle physics experiments.  However, the performance of the detection systems used in these experiments is often limited by the properties of presently available detectors.  This project will investigate a new design for cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors that promises to provide high energy resolution and high detection efficiency at room temperature in a cost-effective manner.  Phase I demonstrated the feasibility of implementing the new detector design on large volume CZT detectors.  Simulation studies as well as experimental evaluation of the new CZT detector design was carried out.  During Phase II, the preparation and properties of large CZT detectors will be evaluated, particularly from the view-point of use in nuclear physics experiments.  Simulation studies of the new detector also will be conducted.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee:  Over and above its scientific use in nuclear, high energy, and space physics experiments, the new scintillator should be commercially applicable to medical imaging, NDE, geological exploration, industrial CT imaging, nuclear non-proliferation, and materials analysis.
