The satellites used to detect and report nuclear activities on earth require the fabrication of novel structural materials that are light and radiation resistant. This project will develop a Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) composite that combines desirable properties – such as thermal robustness, electrical conductivity, and radiation shielding – suitable for use in satellite components such as electromechanical housings and other structural parts. In Phase I, radiation-resistant glass fiber will be synthesized from fly ash, impregnated with electrical conductance enhancers, and combined with a commercial thermoplastic resin, in order to obtain a radiation resistant lightweight structural composite.
Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The radiation-shielding composite should be particularly valuable in satellite subsystems, providing performance improvements and component mass reduction.
