Real time computational tools are needed by utilities to manage the electrical distribution network and maintain reliable operation.  To address this need, this project will investigate the state estimation problem using the evolving theory of hybrid systems,  i.e. systems composed of both continuous dynamics and discrete events.  This approach allows the state estimation problem for power networks to be posed in a systematic setting.  By addressing the problem in this way, economic system operation can be assured, and the system can be assessed and secured in the face of equipment failures and transmission-line outages.  In Phase I, the validity of the technical approach will be demonstrated using benchmark scenarios and simulations.  Phase II will extend these techniques and computational tools to realistic scenarios in pilot tests for ultility mamagement.  Phase II also result will in a design toolbox that will allow engineers to compute estimation strategies for various network configurations.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:  The design toolbox should find use in managing the day-to-day operations of the power distribution system.  Other applications involving sensor fusion and estimation also should benefit.  These applications include manufacturing; air traffic control; port security and management; and the deployment of unmanned agents for exploration, search and rescue, and defense.
