The use of ultrasupercritical boilers represents an emerging technology that offers increased efficiency to the coal-fired power generation industry. However, the alloys used for ultrasupercritical boilers do not have sufficient oxidation and corrosion resistance. This project will develop a new coating process for the alloy structures. The process will produce a thick, composite suface layer that is functionally graded to the alloy, and provides enhanced oxidation and corrosion resistance. Phase I will quantify the oxidation and corrosion resistance of ferritic, austenitic, and Ni based alloys, under conditions appropriate to the supercritical boiler application.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new coating process should be applicable to boilers, turbine blades, gears, and cutting tools.
