The use of current wind turbine technology is limited by its high capital costs and non-competitive return on investment.  Further, the acceptance of wind turbines is hindered due to operational costs associated with repair and maintenance from stress degradation of system components.  This project will develop an innovative Plasma Aerodynamic Control Effectors (PACE) system to improve the performance of wind turbines.  The PACE concept consists of "smart" rotor blades with integrated sensor-actuator-controller modules.  Wind turbine performance will be improved through the use of a virtual-shaping technology for the rotor blades.

Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee:  The PACE system should be capable of capturing an additional 30% of energy, and reducing aerodynamic loading and noise on wind turbines.  Supplementary benefits include reduced blade structure weight and complexity, which translates into reduced initial capital costs.  In addition, the system should have aerodynamic applications including commercial and military aircraft (fixed wing and rotor craft), automobiles, and “smart” munitions.
