Amount: $100,000
Small
lithium-ion batteries, which contain fluorinated low lattice energy lithium
salts, are used in computers, cellular phones, and cameras. However, for the mass production of the full
size batteries needed for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV),
the electrolytes derived from these salts are far too expensive. Moreover, they are potentially hazardous to
the environment. Therefore, this project
will identify, develop, and employ novel, cost-effective lithium salts for mass
production of full size lithium-ion batteries for EV/HEV applications.
Commercial
Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The
new lithium salts should find a market in the large-scale production of
full-size lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. They also should be applicable to consumer
products such as computers, cell phones, camcorders, and cameras. These materials will meet the requirements at
much lower cost than currently available materials.
