Demand for neutron beams at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) has exceeded expectations, resulting in a strong incentive to proceed rapidly with a planned facility expansion.  In order to maximize the usage of these neutron beams, an easy-to-use portal access to DOE computing facilities must be developed for simulations of virtual neutron instrumentation.  This project will extend a user-friendly Multitier Portal Architecture, developed in collaboration with the SNS, in order to provide virtual instrumentation experiment capabilities to neutron scientists.  The enhanced capability not only will allow neutron scientist to perform extensive pre-experiment virtual simulations, but also will yield live data simulation comparisons and beam sample time estimates.

Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee:  Simulation of neutron experiments should provide a deeper understanding of the physics of neutron scattering so that neutron scattering can be applied more effectively.  In addition to the benefit to U.S. and international neutron facilities, improved simulations of neutron experiments should contribute to multiple applications in electronics, material science, manufacturing, medical research, and engineering.
