Project Title: A High Brightness, Photoelectron Linac
SBIR/STTR Project ID#(s): 40833, 50321

Technology:

In these DOE SBIR projects we developed a new photoelectron linear accelerator which provides a high brightness electron beam for research, industry and medical applications. The research work included theory, design, fabrication and test of a compact photoinjector together with the focusing magnets.  An S-band photoinjector fabricated by DULY Research has been installed at UCLA.

Benefits:

The DULY PWT (Plane Wave Transformer) photoinjector fulfills one of the goals stated by the DOE high energy physics accelerator division in developing a compact, cost effective electron  injector with specified parameters.

Applications:

The photoinjector has wide potential uses as:

n      An injector for future linear colliders for high energy physics research

n      A driver for advanced light source (FEL, synchrotrons)

n      Electron and X-ray sources for medical diagnosis and therapy

n      Protein crystallography

Benefit to the Company:

The SBIR projects were instrumental in helping DULY Research win a competitive bid of a Jefferson Laboratory contract of approx. $500,000 for engineering services of the FEL upgrade project.  The market potential for the PWT photoinjector which DULY has built can be classified into two categories:  First, direct purchase of the PWTs by universities and laboratories around world could result in sales of $10M in 5 years.  Secondly, if the PWT is used to produce ultra-short pulse X-rays the market in biotechnology and medicine could expand to $500,000 in 10 years.  Currently the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is considering using the DULY PWT photoinjector as a polarized electron source for the future linear collider.
