Dr. Corey Cohn joined the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs as AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in September 2009. His responsibilities include assisting on international matters by providing policy guidance to Office of Science programs on international collaboration, drafting and negotiating international Science & Technology agreements, serving as an international program liaison within and outside of DOE, and helping to develop a long-term strategy for international activities. Corey comes to Washington with a background in geochemistry, astrobiology, and nanoparticle toxicity with work experience in Sweden, Denmark, and Japan. Corey began his research career studying environmental geochemistry. Later, as a Fulbright Fellow, NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes Fellow, and National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow, he conducted origin of life research in Stockholm, Yokohama, and University of California San Diego, respectively. His work led to collaborations with biochemists, pathologists, and scientists in the medical geology community. One result of this work was Corey’s trip to Amman, Jordan where he instructed Iraqi medical doctors on the use of equipment supplied as part of a USAID project to monitor the environment and human health of Iraq. Corey arrives in Washington from Copenhagen, Denmark where he was a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow studying occupational health issues at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment. Corey received his B.S. summa cum laude and Ph.D. in Geosciences at Stony Brook University.
